Gwen and myself, along with a couple of close “friends”, were given the great opportunity to judge the first annual South Padre Island Farmer’s Market Melon Tasting Competition this past Sunday.
Here’s the situation: There were two farms that claimed to have the best tasting melon, so what better way than to bring in a group of un-biased individuals to give their honest opinion? A post was made on the farmers market Facebook page asking for volunteers, so I decided to offer my taste buds! In no time at all I received a message from Mr. Jack Moffitt giving me the details.
We were asked to round up a group of our friends and given free reign over the rules and judging criteria.
Gwen and I were so very excited, we forgot to find the correct time.
So with our trusty team of hungry judges we set out to the Island at 10:15am, thinking that we were going to be amongst the first to arrive. It turns out that we were wrong about it starting at 12pm. We arrived on South Padre around 11:30am, and then we realized that we had NO idea where we were supposed to be. After circling Padre Boulevard, the main road, multiple times, and a few calls to Mr. Moffitt, we arrived and were guided to a shade tent, table and chairs set up for us, and this sign!
An announcement was made that the judges had arrived, calling all entries to the judges table for tasting. We received two melons. Bayview Veggies entered a beautiful “Napoli” from NESeed Co., and Acacia Farms entered a similar melon a “Sivan” melon. We scored the melons based on flavor and texture. Below is a picture of the two.

It was a tough choice because both melons possessed not only an amazing texture, but great flavor. It was a close race, but in the end Bayview Veggies was the winner.

The market is open on Sunday’s from 11am-1pm at 8605 Padre Blvd at Shores, South Padre Island, TX 78597. Go visit them and see all of the wonderful produce and products they have to offer!
