Sandwich in a can? And a contest!

5 Jun

Hello! This is Gwendolyn! I am super excited to be working with my great friend Sam on this blog! The first review of the relaunch, which we did together, was of the Candwich.

Sam had contacted Mark One Foods back when she first started the blog. At the time they didn’t have any samples for her, but sent us this box a week before we relaunched. Perfect timing!

Sam and I got together over the weekend to do a bit of planning, and try out these sandwiches. We were, as you could imagine, more than a little apprehensive to try this product. After a bit of research on my part, a few reviews said the ingredients were sub-par and barely palpable. However, I don’t know what Candwiches these people were eating, because we rather liked ours.

We were sent a 4-pack of Peanut Butter and Grape Jelly. Unlike we first assumed, the Candwiches do not come pre-made, everything is separately packed inside the can.

After popping the top of the can and pulling everything out, we decided to try each item separately (except the Laffy Taffy because we both like our teeth).  The bread was a bit on the yeasty side, but good overall. However it was not pre-sliced, leaving me to butcher it with the included plastic knife. It’s never easy to cut anything with a plastic knife. The peanut butter was thick, but mild. And the jelly was flavorful but not too sweet. The foil packets they came in, however, were rather difficult to open. The “Easy-tear” wasn’t so easy, and we ended up needing scissors (because, again, we like our teeth).

After we assembled the sandwich, sliced it in half, and began to eat, we were pleasantly surprised to find that it tasted exactly like the PB&J’s we would make at home. It left my mouth a bit dry, but almost anything will, and Sam didn’t have any problem with it at all. The combo of peanut butter and jelly masked the yeastiness of the bread nicely. It made for a very good sandwich.

The few problems we had with it were all personal preferences. As mentioned before, pre-sliced bread would have been nice (especially if packing it as a lunch for a young child) and our fingers got sticky from opening the packets, so a wet-wipe included in the can would have been awesome. Also, the packets would have been very hard for a child to open. Though! As somebody who is a bit clumsy, and cuts herself on everything (even if it isn’t sharp) I was excited to see that the pop-top on the lid was lined with some sort of wax seal, so it’d be almost impossible to cut yourself (believe me, I tried!)

Overall Rating:

7 out of 10!

Now on to the contest!

Since quite a few of our facebook friends have shown an interest in the Candwich, Sam and I decided to give a chance to two of our readers to try it for themselves. Leave a comment saying where you would eat your Candwich, like us on Facebook, and like Candwich by Mark One Foods. Sam and I will get together to pick our favorite two comments for the winners, so make it a crazy one!

Contest ends in a month, on July 6th, so good luck!

Organic Smoked Oyster Mushroom Chowder Recipe & Review

20 Nov

I am going to be honest, I DO NOT like chowders. So, when I received the package from FungusAmongUs I was ecstatic. Then, as I was going through the contests and saw this soup my stomach dropped to the ground. I looked over the ingredients and came up with this.  <!–more–>

Onion Chowder Cups

You will need:

1 Package Organic Smoked Oyster Mushroom

1 pint Heavy Cream

2 cups water

1 package of biscuits

1/2 an onion

1 muffin pan

1 Sauce pan

1 small saute pan

Mediterranean Mushroom Melange- to your taste

1 tbsp Olive Oil

1 spoon

Pour 1 pkg. Smoked Oyster Chowder, 1 pint heavy cream, and 2 cups of water into your sauce pan;  simmer on medium.

Open your package of biscuits, take your greased muffin pan and press the dough in the mold to form a “cup”.

One you have finished  bake the biscuit for half of the cooking time listed on the directions.

Take your saute pan and add the tablespoon of olive oil, onions, and Mediterranean Melange to taste and saute.

Take the muffin pan out and using your spoon flatten the biscuit so that if can be filled.

Add a few onions to each cup.

Then pour a few spoon fulls of your Oyster mushroom chowder on top.

Once all of the cups have been filled place the pan back in the oven for the remainder of the time that biscuit package advises.

Once done let sit for a few minutes and serve!

I have a confession to make… I think I may like chowder after all. I am so glad that I gave this a try, the flavor, and texture are both amazing! My Husband and father had a blast eating the little “cups”. Again this meal took less than 45 mins. So far these soups seem to be great and some thing good to have on hand for a quick, substantial meal.

The first FungusAmongUs Recipe & Review

20 Nov

I approached FungusAmongUs the day that I discovered them. Why? I love companies that make their personal  “Gourmet” accessible to the masses… and I liked their name.

I received a package in no time, here is what was sent:

Moroccan Porcini & Green Lentil Soup (Organic, Vegan, Low Fat, Low Carb, Gluten, Dairy, and Cholesterol Free)

Spicy Shitake Vegetable Soup (Organic, Vegan, Low Fat, Low Carb, Gluten, Dairy, and Cholesterol Free)

Smoked Oyster Mushroom Chowder ( Organic, Vegetarian, Gluten Free, Non-Fat, and Low Carb)

Mushroom Melange- Fiesta Blend (Organic, Vegan)

Mushroom Melange- Pacific Blend (Organic, Vegan)

Mushroom Melange- Mediterranean Blend (Organic, Vegan)

Which will be the first ingredient for my mad scientist cravings?

I chose to make Shitake & Vegetable Rice Pilaf <my own version>

What I used:

1 Package FungusAmongUs Spicy Shitake & Vegetable Soup

1 Tbs. FungusAmongUs Mushroom Melange Pacific Blend

3 Ripe roma tomatoes

4 Cups water

2 cups rice <any kind you like is fine.>

¼ cup flour

2 tbsp Olive oil

1 sauté pan <I used an uber tiny one>

Pour 1 pkg. Spicy Shitake and Vegetable Soup into a 6-cup saucepan with 4 cups of water.

Simmer uncovered on medium heat for 20 minutes.

Cook your rice to your taste.

Take the tomatoes and slice them. <about 1/2 inch thick>

Get your sauté pan and pour the 2 tbsp oil and set on medium-high heat.

In a clean plate mix the flour and Melange, then take your tomato slices coat them with flour and fry.

*Be very careful how long you fry them after about 60 seconds they turn into mush*I set the tomatoes on a paper towel to absorb all of the excess oil.

Once the soup has reduced to Sauce consistency turn heat off and plate.

As soon as the soup hit the water the kitchen was consumed by an amazing aroma. I was very impressed with the fact that the vegetables held their shape so well. This soup tasted as if someone had slaved over a hot stove for hours upon hours. Great amount of mushrooms! This entire meal took less than 45 minutes to prepare!

Lazy Chinese Pan-Fried Dumplings (a.k.a. pot stickers)

18 Sep

We have been looking forward to making Chinese Pan-Fried Dumplings. Samantha and her husbands’ guilty pleasure, pan-fried dumplings, but to be honest both of us were intimidated.

When the wonderful Migliore Gourmet sent us an exciting package. Enclosed were some great products, but two that immediately inspired us.

The two products that caught our eye were Migliore Kettle Roasted Garlic Oil, and Migliore Tres Citrus Balsamic Vinegar . There are thousands of possibilities, but we both felt that the time had come.

We both sat down and began searching for a recipe that was simple, and easy to follow. What felt like hundreds of recipes later, we thought to look at youtube.com and found this video. We knew that we weren’t going to follow the recipe to a T, but this video filled us with much needed assurance.

The following is the recipe including all of the substitutions and additions that we made: Continue reading
