Saucy Mama’s Raspberry Vinaigrette

11 Jul

I’m really beginning to see a pattern here… I have fallen in love with another wonderful Saucy Mama product.

Recently we had been sent a variety of Saucy Mama products. You’ve already seen my review of the Champagne Honey Mustard, and that I loved that product, so I was excited to try the Vinaigrette. If one product was delicious, I was sure everything would be. And I wasn’t wrong!

We’re not big salad eaters in my house, mostly because we have a hard time eating all the lettuce before it goes bad, so rather than use it in the typical way, I decided to toss some warm pasta in the dressing and serve it for dinner. This is something I do often with your standard Italian dressing, it’s a nice light warm meal for the hot summer days of South Texas, and Saucy Mama’s Raspberry Vinaigrette tasted wonderful on the pasta. My husband scarfed his entire meal down, then ate half of mine. He refuses to let me go back to using standard Italian dressing on pasta. It must be this, all the time.

Overall Rating: 10 out of 10

This Raspberry Vinaigrette is sweet and mildly tangy. It’s absolutely delicious. I’ve used it multiple times for dinner over the past month or so, and I think I have enough for one more dinner before the bottle is empty. I will be sad to see it go… I highly recommend this product!

Saucy Mama’s Champagne Honey Mustard

20 Jun

Saucy Mama Cafe recently sent Sam and I a variety of their mustards and dressings to try out. There were so many of them, we knew the most efficient way to try them all was to split up the load, and I was lucky enough to snatch Saucy Mama’s Champagne & Honey Mustard before Sam could call dibs.

Barhyte.com, where you can purchase Saucy Mama’s Products, describes the Champagne Honey Mustard as:

Delicate and delicious, try it with cold cuts, sausage, cheese and crusty French bread. It’s a great secret ingredient in salad dressings!

And I must say, they are absolutely correct! I have been trying it in a variety of ways: in place of the Heinz honey mustard I use in one of my favorite fish recipes, on hotdogs, corndogs, burgers, and sandwiches! This mustard has a wonderful smoky-sweet flavor, and when I spreading it on my fish the first time I tried it, the whole kitchen was full of the aroma. It was delicious.

The one and only time I did not like the mustard, is when I tried it on corndogs. I don’t know about you, I love lots of mustard on my corndogs. It’s the only time I go overboard with condiments. However, the Champagne Honey Mustard has such a strong flavor, you only need a little bit to taste it, and the amount I used for my corndog was way to much. So, completely my fault, not Saucy Mama’s, and I will continue to use this mustard on every sandwich and burger I eat until the bottle is empty. Then I will mourn the loss of a delicious mustard, and purchase another bottle!

Overall Rating: 9 out of 10

While this mustard isn’t your standard all-purpose mustard, and can’t be used for everything it is still wonderfully delicious! Besides the fact that you can easily overpower yourself if you use too much, there have been no complaints from my home.

Zone Perfect Sweet & Salty Bars

14 Jun

If you were to walk into your local grocery store with the intent on purchasing a ‘bar’ to have around for a snack, or when you’re on the go, the choices may be a tad bit overwhelming.  Some bars are disgustingly sweet and offer scant traces of nutritional value, while others are healthy as can be but taste as if you are eating textured cardboard.  Up until recently I had given up on the search until I heard about the new Zone Perfect Sweet & Salty bars.

They offer two exciting varieties:  Trail Mix and Cashew Pretzel (both pictured below)

Trail Mix

Cashew Pretzel

We were sent one of each to try and let our readers know our opinion.

Trail mix (top):

This was not only my favorite but Gwen’s as well. Our first impression of the texture was quite good, the bar was not tough, nor was it soggy. It kept its shape as we ate, and did not leave any residue to act as paste on our fingers. Peanut butter is the dominant flavor in this variety, but we were still able to enjoy the accompanying flavors as well. The only issue that we seemed to have was the lack of raisins.

Overall: 8 out of 10

Cashew Pretzel (bottom):

As soon as the package was opened we seemed to be surrounded by the aroma of coffee.  Initially we both noticed a very bitter taste followed by a mildly sweet, yet pleasant caramel flavor. The pretzels were amazing, maintaining their crunchiness along with the cashews, while the caramel added a great contrast. This bar would be a great choice for someone with a sweet tooth, looking for an interesting twist.

Overall: 6 out of 10

We would like to thank The Zone Perfect for allowing us to try there wonderful product. It was agreed upon by Gwen and myself that these would be perfect for a snack at work, on the road, hiking, or while at home looking for a healthy alternative to potato chips or candy.  Both varieties were wonderful, but you don’t have to take our word for it. Pick up a box at your local Supermarket and tell us what you think!

Sandwich in a can? And a contest!

5 Jun

Hello! This is Gwendolyn! I am super excited to be working with my great friend Sam on this blog! The first review of the relaunch, which we did together, was of the Candwich.

Sam had contacted Mark One Foods back when she first started the blog. At the time they didn’t have any samples for her, but sent us this box a week before we relaunched. Perfect timing!

Sam and I got together over the weekend to do a bit of planning, and try out these sandwiches. We were, as you could imagine, more than a little apprehensive to try this product. After a bit of research on my part, a few reviews said the ingredients were sub-par and barely palpable. However, I don’t know what Candwiches these people were eating, because we rather liked ours.

We were sent a 4-pack of Peanut Butter and Grape Jelly. Unlike we first assumed, the Candwiches do not come pre-made, everything is separately packed inside the can.

After popping the top of the can and pulling everything out, we decided to try each item separately (except the Laffy Taffy because we both like our teeth).  The bread was a bit on the yeasty side, but good overall. However it was not pre-sliced, leaving me to butcher it with the included plastic knife. It’s never easy to cut anything with a plastic knife. The peanut butter was thick, but mild. And the jelly was flavorful but not too sweet. The foil packets they came in, however, were rather difficult to open. The “Easy-tear” wasn’t so easy, and we ended up needing scissors (because, again, we like our teeth).

After we assembled the sandwich, sliced it in half, and began to eat, we were pleasantly surprised to find that it tasted exactly like the PB&J’s we would make at home. It left my mouth a bit dry, but almost anything will, and Sam didn’t have any problem with it at all. The combo of peanut butter and jelly masked the yeastiness of the bread nicely. It made for a very good sandwich.

The few problems we had with it were all personal preferences. As mentioned before, pre-sliced bread would have been nice (especially if packing it as a lunch for a young child) and our fingers got sticky from opening the packets, so a wet-wipe included in the can would have been awesome. Also, the packets would have been very hard for a child to open. Though! As somebody who is a bit clumsy, and cuts herself on everything (even if it isn’t sharp) I was excited to see that the pop-top on the lid was lined with some sort of wax seal, so it’d be almost impossible to cut yourself (believe me, I tried!)

7 out of 10!

Now on to the contest!

Since quite a few of our facebook friends have shown an interest in the Candwich, Sam and I decided to give a chance to two of our readers to try it for themselves. Leave a comment saying where you would eat your Candwich, like us on Facebook, and like Candwich by Mark One Foods. Sam and I will get together to pick our favorite two comments for the winners, so make it a crazy one!

Contest ends in a month, on July 6th, so good luck!

I am having issues with the images so I will post the picture later!

December: My month of Tea Day 1

2 Dec

I lost my grandmother on June 24, 2009. She was my best friend. My world.

She and I were both insomniacs. We would sit in the kitchen watching Seinfeld, playing cards, and…. drinking hot tea. We would stay up until 4a.m. doing just that and would make pot after pot of tea. I have not had one cup of tea since I lost her so this month is going to be a flood of emotions and memories.

How will this work?

– I am going to post the tea that I am trying every day along with an outline of what I think, then at the end of every week I will go into further detail.

December 1, 2010: Day 1

Tea: Teatulia’s Bengal Breakfast Tea

Steeped 2 minutes

Very rich aroma.

Bold yet not overwhealming.

Once I added creamer the flavor seemed to intensify and I was able to fully enjoy.

In one word: Mellow
