Sandwich in a can? And a contest!

Hello! This is Gwendolyn! I am super excited to be working with my great friend Sam on this blog! The first review of the relaunch, which we did together, was of the Candwich.

Sam had contacted Mark One Foods back when she first started the blog. At the time they didn’t have any samples for her, but sent us this box a week before we relaunched. Perfect timing!

Sam and I got together over the weekend to do a bit of planning, and try out these sandwiches. We were, as you could imagine, more than a little apprehensive to try this product. After a bit of research on my part, a few reviews said the ingredients were sub-par and barely palpable. However, I don’t know what Candwiches these people were eating, because we rather liked ours.

We were sent a 4-pack of Peanut Butter and Grape Jelly. Unlike we first assumed, the Candwiches do not come pre-made, everything is separately packed inside the can.

After popping the top of the can and pulling everything out, we decided to try each item separately (except the Laffy Taffy because we both like our teeth).  The bread was a bit on the yeasty side, but good overall. However it was not pre-sliced, leaving me to butcher it with the included plastic knife. It’s never easy to cut anything with a plastic knife. The peanut butter was thick, but mild. And the jelly was flavorful but not too sweet. The foil packets they came in, however, were rather difficult to open. The “Easy-tear” wasn’t so easy, and we ended up needing scissors (because, again, we like our teeth).

After we assembled the sandwich, sliced it in half, and began to eat, we were pleasantly surprised to find that it tasted exactly like the PB&J’s we would make at home. It left my mouth a bit dry, but almost anything will, and Sam didn’t have any problem with it at all. The combo of peanut butter and jelly masked the yeastiness of the bread nicely. It made for a very good sandwich.

The few problems we had with it were all personal preferences. As mentioned before, pre-sliced bread would have been nice (especially if packing it as a lunch for a young child) and our fingers got sticky from opening the packets, so a wet-wipe included in the can would have been awesome. Also, the packets would have been very hard for a child to open. Though! As somebody who is a bit clumsy, and cuts herself on everything (even if it isn’t sharp) I was excited to see that the pop-top on the lid was lined with some sort of wax seal, so it’d be almost impossible to cut yourself (believe me, I tried!)
