Lazy Chinese Pan-Fried Dumplings (a.k.a. pot stickers)

We have been looking forward to making Chinese Pan-Fried Dumplings. Samantha and her husbands’ guilty pleasure, pan-fried dumplings, but to be honest both of us were intimidated.

When the wonderful Migliore Gourmet sent us an exciting package. Enclosed were some great products, but two that immediately inspired us.

The two products that caught our eye were Migliore Kettle Roasted Garlic Oil, and Migliore Tres Citrus Balsamic Vinegar . There are thousands of possibilities, but we both felt that the time had come.

We both sat down and began searching for a recipe that was simple, and easy to follow. What felt like hundreds of recipes later, we thought to look at youtube.com and found this video. We knew that we weren’t going to follow the recipe to a T, but this video filled us with much needed assurance.

Pot Stickers

The following is the recipe including all of the substitutions and additions that we made:
4 Cups all purpose flour
1 cup hot water
1 ½ cup water at room temperature
5 eggs
1 lb ground pork
1 bunch green onions
1 package Bean Sprout
2 oz. Kettle Roasted Garlic Oil

Add 1 cup hot water to the flour.
Then add 1 ½ cup water room temp. water.
Knead until the dough is smooth.
Let rest for about 15 minutes.
Break the eggs and stir fry(scramble) them. Making sure that when you are cooking them they are in little pieces.
Mix the eggs, ground pork, salt, green onions, been sprouts, and the Kettle Roasted Garlic Oil.
Cut the dough in several pieces then flatten.
Add the filling, then fold the edges.

This is where our oh so wonderful knack of randomly doubling recipes killed our “groove”. After a while the dough really did not like us so we decided to make little ball like pouches (because that is all our wonderful dough would allow us to do)
Fry the dumplings on medium heat until the skin becomes yellow and crispy, Make sure to add oil and flip the sides. (we used olive oil to fry them)

Dipping Sauce:
1 cup soy sauce (any brand will do)
¼ cup balsamic vinegar (we used Migliore Tres Citrus Balsamic Vinegar)
½ cup diced green onions
1 Table Spoon Sugar
1 Teaspoon Sesame Oil (any brand will do)
Diced Ginger to taste

Mix all ingredients together in a medium bow.

Samantha loves, I repeat, LOVES bean sprouts, and Briana had never tried them so we decided to stir-fry the remainder of the bean sprouts for a light side dish that would not over power the Dumplings.

This meal may not have been the most esthetically pleasing, but WOW, did that flavor pack a great punch!

Keeping in mind that Briana and I are garlic fiends‘, and I personally LOVE LOVE LOVE balsamic vinegar , we were in heaven yet again. If you read our previous “Folgers Black Silk ” product review you’ll know that the “Hallelujah Chorus” will sound when a certain degree of excitement has been reached. This was one of those moments!

Migliore Kettle Roasted Garlic Oil :
From Migliore Gourmet Foods Website: “For the garlic lover, this wonderful oil adds rich flavor and aroma to any dish. For an instant pasta dish, saute with freshly chopped Roma tomatoes and basil then toss with your favorite pasta.”

We decided to use this in our Lazy Chinese Pan-Fried Dumpling recipe. As soon as you pour the oil out of the bottle the intoxicating aroma of pure garlic takes over the entire room! We added 2oz. to our dumpling stuffing. We were actually worried that the garlic would over power all of the other ingredients, but we were wrong. Just the right amount of flavor to compliment the pork, eggs, and chives. In fact, it seemed to bring those flavors out so much more! Normally, from our experience with grocery bought oils, there is not really a separation between the aroma and flavor. Basically, it says garlic and that’s just what you will get. There is no true complexity to the flavor. With Miligore Kettle Roasted Garlic Oil, from the moment you open the bottle, until the meal is finished you get an amazing experience. The aroma of the oil as you are cooking, the flavor of all other foods that the oil was been added to are all exceptional.

Migliore Tres Citrus Balsamic Vinegar:
From Migliore Gourmet Foods Website: Our barrel-aged balsamic vinegar of Modena, Italy has been blended with sweet oranges, tangerines, and a splash of lime.

We decided to use this for our Lazy Pan-Fried Dumpling Dipping Sauce. By the time we were ready to make our sauce we were both exhausted. We saw the sauce being done as a sign that we would get to rest soon. We added all of the ingredients to the bowl except for the vinegar. When we finally did add the vinegar to the sauce we were both immediately perked up a bit. The citrus notes in this are … honestly we have tried to find another word for this but have been unsuccessful… breath taking! There are thousands of products that have hints of citrus or are citrus based, but I almost always find that there is an artificial or chemical flavor to them. With the Tres Citrus Balsamic Vinegar there is not even a hint of chemical or artificial flavor, you honestly can taste true fruit! We were very impressed by this products ability to stand out even when mixed with a very, very strong soy sauce.

Was this recipe easy to follow?5 stars
This recipe was great, and the fact that it was a video and not just written down was an added bonus! The visual directions were very easy to follow, and if we had any questions we just had to watch it again!

Were the prep time and cooking time accurate?5 stars
No prep time or cook time were listed, so we didn’t feel rushed. It was as if she was saying “ Here is my recipe, I know you can do this” .

Is this recipe budget friendly?4 and half stars
Considering the fact that we did have to buy a few things new that we didn’t have in our kitchen it was a tiny bit costly, but the finishing products was well worth the price. At restaurant you can get an order of 6 dumplings for about $7.95, that is with the dumplings and a small serving of sauce.

Would you use this recipe again?5 stars
This is now a family favorite, so we will be making this a lot!

Product Review:

Packaging: 4 and half stars
Very classy packaging! Not over done, not plain in the slightest bit. The only issue we had was with the corks, they didn’t seem to agree with us at all, other than that perfect!

Is the product easy to come by? 4 and half stars
Right now you can find Migliore products at their online store and at Claro’s Italian Markets in California, but are so worth the online shopping session. If only these products could be sold EVERYWHERE!!

Budget friendly? 5 stars
For the quality of these products alone, you would expect to be paying well into the 40’s at the least! At $12.95 for 8.5 oz. this is true gourmet on a budget!

Would you use the product again?Yes any day!

Overall: 5 stars
Not favoring one company or another, we are very impressed and believe that these two go way beyond expectations, and have decided that we would give the product a perfect overall.
